July 30, 2013
Goa:
Retired IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre and former additional chief secretary Leena Mehendale has been chosen by Goa state government committee, headed by the CM, as Goa's Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). Journalist SandeshPrabhudesai and former senior administrative and quasi-judicial functionary of the Union defense ministry Stanley Coutinho have been selected as state information commissioners (SIC).

It is learnt that procedures of appointment of the three chosen candidates to the posts will be completed within 15 days."SCIC and SIC are posts of a five-year term or until the officials attain 65 years. The 1950 born Mehendale will serve as CIC for two-and-half years, Coutinho will get a four-year term and Prabhudesai is expected to get a full five-year term”.

The state information commission's office is being shifted to new premises as the current one does not have even the basic facilities. "The old Central Library premises are being renovated, after which the mines and geology department will be shifted there. The present office of the mines and geology department will be converted into the office of the information commission,"

A post graduate in physics and a law graduate, Mehendale is presently a member of the central administrative tribunal, Bombay bench, and has served as collector and commissioner in several regions of Maharashtra. A Goan, Coutinho is a commerce, law and management graduate. Prabhudesai, also a Goan, and with 26 years of media experience.

As there is huge backlog of cases , state Govt. has filled in posts of SCIC & SICs vacant for the past two-and-half years. It is expected that speedy disposal of second appeals and complaints pending in Goa State Information Commission will start soon.
